History of Club

Competitive Sailing was held in Wanganui around the late 1800's under the name of the Wanganui Sailing Club. One of the oldest trophies held at Sailing Wanganui is the Studholme Cup and records the name of E M Silk as winning, in an 18' class called "Dotterell", a little after the turn of the century.

The Wanganui Sailing Club (Inc) was inaugurated in 1934 and took over from the original Wanganui Sailing Club that was formed with 45 members on 7 January 1904. The first organised race was held at Putiki on 14 January 1904.

Early sailing was held at Putiki until the Cobham bridge was built in 1960/62. At that time all club sailing was cancelled to enable all club members to spend the maximum time available building the club house in its current location at Gilberd Street. This 2 storey steel frame building forms the basis of the current club facility.
