Newsletter – OctoberStart to the season
The season has got off to a cracking start with the Blue Book night, working bee and shakedown series all well attended September events. The sheds were cleaned up during the working bee and some much needed plumbing repairs completed that now means the boiler is functional for those necessary hot showers. Some of the sailing was a bit rusty during the shakedown series.
Opening Day
A great turnout with many new faces, unfortunately wind and flood conditions meant that sailing was abandoned.
Saturday Training
Learn to sail on Saturdays has a keen group of about 8 adult and 8 junior first time sailors, plus another 4 junior members are taking part in the programme. There has been great sailing on 2 days out of 3. A very cold wet day was better spent rigging an opti and starling in the Clubhouse. The training session needs about 10 members to run smoothly providing training and support. Your help is needed. Saturday training runs through to 5th December.
The sail training programme is the opportunity for people to try sailing, meet Club members, see the buzz of sailing as we do and join the Club to grow the membership. It’s a great programme to support.
The Season to date
The sailing to date has been a mixed with warm light winds, raining cool turning to cold and steady winds, to raining really windy and cold. There has been something for everyone. The saviour has been the hot showers. However if you put on the right clothing it is a good chance to learn your heavy weather skills you can’t beat time on the water just look at the conditions and think if the sun was shining would you go out if so get out there and do it afterward you will be pleased you gave it a go.
While Rob’s recovering both Roy and Terry have stepped in to help so far (Thanks guys)it’s great to have two rescue boats out there they are also able to give you some training so if you need some help ask them to keep an eye out for you.
After sailing on Sundays we are going to give out one spot prize each day to enter just sign on and go sailing this includes crew who must also sign on
A training session was run by Wayne Holt Regional Support Officer – Yachting on Sunday 18th. The session was to be for 2 handed boats, but given the wintry conditions was changed to general principles demonstrated on the starling in the clubhouse. Wayne has promised to run several training evening during the season. These sessions are programmed to make use of evening tides at Gilbert Street. 470 crews have grabbed first in November and the other date available is Thursday 25th February.
